About Ravera Ragdolls

OUR STORY

My wish for a Ragdoll cat began many years ago, while watching a TV program called “Burkes Backyard” when they road tested the Ragdoll cat. “Tia” was my first Ragdoll cat bought for me by my husband for mother’s day. I was so amazed by her relaxed nature for a cat, she loved our son Jake (only 4mths at the time). Tia just wanted to be around Jake and played with him ever so gently.

Tia is retired now! Jake and Tia have a special bond, Tia is never too far from Jake and she always goes to bed with Jake at bedtime. Tia began my passion with this very special feline!

A Passion for Animals From the Start

I always had a passion for animals. From a young age, I was drawn to all creatures large and small and my love for them only grew as I got older. My childhood was filled with memories of rescuing animals in need, from chickens to mice to cats, and even horses.

Despite my mother’s hesitation, I was determined to help any animal I could, even if it meant hiding them in a pram. I once saved four little kittens that had been abandoned after their mother was hit by a car. With a heart full of compassion and determination, I took them to school with me and cared for them during class. From that moment on, there was no looking back. I had found my passion and purpose was to care for animals.

Putting Love Into Practice

As I grew older, my love for animals never waned. I became a nurse and took many courses, in animal studies, horse husbandry, and have a keen eye for genetics and value genetic testing. I also have attending seminars, held by the University of Veterinary Science on feline disease FIP, further expanding my knowledge and experience in animal care, animal behaviour, and training with a keen interest in science to improve health in genetics.

With my vast knowledge and experience, I found my passion in the Ragdolls and create a boutique cattery dedicated to breeding Ragdoll cats – a breed known for their gentle temperament and loving personalities. Ravera Ragdolls was born in 2003 from my desire to provide people/families a healthy, well-socialised fur baby that bring joy to their forever family and giving the best chance possible that their forever fur baby will live a full life.

Our Ragdolls

When it comes to companions, Ragdoll cats are among the most interactive, gentle and with the sweetest of dispositions. They have been referred to as having traits of a dog, which might explain why they have become so popular with the working person and modern family. They love their human family, always wanting to know where they and are interactive and yet they have the independence of a feline, making them the ideal fur family member.

Staying True to the Original Vision of Ann Baker

At Ravera Ragdolls, We strive to maintain the vision of Ann Baker as she clearly worked so hard to create this wonderful feline. We specialize in breeding Ragdolls in the classic seal and blue point, mitted, and bicolour patterns and occasionally Lilac and Chocolate. Our decision to focus exclusively on the blue eyed, pointed Ragdoll wasn’t taken lightly and we remain unwavering, as we want to honour the creator of this remarkable feline as it was the vision of the Ragdoll creator, Ann Baker.

Ann Baker started developing the breed in the 1960’s, then she made her vision clear and patented in Ragdoll in 1975 which was the pointed Ragdolls with blue eyes only.

The first Ragdolls came to Australia in November 1989. Since they arrived they have become very popular with all age groups, families big and small.

While some breeders choose to experiment with breeding different coats and types, such as solid, mink, and sepia, at Ravera Ragdolls, yes in the beginning there were solid colours, she selected the pointed ones with blue eyed felines to call “Ragdoll”. We choose to honour the foundation of the Ragdoll and Ann Baker’s vision that she patented.

We believe that like making a delicious cake, every ingredient is important, just taking one ingredient isn’t her vision. It is our goal to continue her legacy of a pointed blue eyed Ragdoll by producing the most beautiful, healthy, and true Ragdolls disposition, which only possess Pointed Ragdolls in our bloodlines and are void of any other variation e.g. solid, mink colourings and will continue to keep them clear of these in our Ragdolls and their bloodlines.

The Importance of Diversity in Bloodlines

At Ravera Ragdolls, we pride ourselves on the diversity of our bloodlines, by carefully selecting each breeding pair it gives us the best possible chance to have genetically healthy kittens. We believe that having diversity in bloodlines is crucial to the health and well-being of the Ragdoll breed. We take a holistic approach with all of our King & Queen pairings in our breeding program.

Our holistic approach to breeding ensures the best possible outcome that our Ragdoll kittens are not only true type, are genetically strong and as healthy as possible. Our commitment to health and wellness is reflected in every aspect of our breeding, from the selection of our imports to the socialization and care of our kittens.

Description of the Ragdoll Cat

The Ragdoll is a second largest feline, the Maine Coon being the largest. They are a large imposing cat with a long and muscular body.
They were named “Ragdoll” (patented in 1975 blue eyed pointed feline) by Anne Baker for their ability to flop when picked up.

The coat is semi long, the longer the better. It is longest around the neck and forms a ruff. It has a soft “rabbit like” texture.

The head is medium sized, broad, modified wedge, flat between the ears. Muzzle is round, medium in length. Chin is well developed. Gentle, nose break. Medium ears with a rounded tip with medium furnishings. Their eyes are blue, the deeper the better, large and oval in shape.

Their hind legs are slightly longer than the front. The paws are large with tufts between the toes. The tail is also long and fluffy.

Kittens are born white; this is because it is already embedded in their genes. They have genetic mutations affecting their metabolic pathways, causing sensitivity to body temperature. These strong reactions to temperature will ultimately become a great factor in their final colour. Ragdolls colour develops slowly and can take up to 3-4 years to reach full size and colour development.

They come in three coat patterns, colour point, mitted and bi-colour. The colours are seal, chocolate, blue, lilac, red, cream, torties and tabbies/lynx in each coat pattern.

WHAT MAKES OUR RAGDOLLS EXCEPTIONAL

Bloodlines

At Ravera Ragdolls, we import our Ragdoll cats from breeders around the world. Our cats possess bloodlines from the USA, UK, Canada, Japan, Finland, Netherland, and Sweden, making them one-of-a-kind and exclusive to our cattery. We take great care in choosing our imports, selecting from likeminded breeders, to enable us to continue with superior health, temperament, lineage, and beauty.

DNA Testing

We understand that it is Mother Nature and nothing is predicted. We understand that health is a top priority for any family adopting a new kitten. In our experience we believe by breeding generation after generation it has given us advantageous results as some of our Ragdolls have life a very full life, one even living up to 20 years.

Our cats undergo regular check-ups, including DNA tests for specific diseases like HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) and PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) and free of FIV (Feline AIDS) and FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus). This gives us confidence that our Ragdolls are as healthy as possible, and hopefully free from genetic issues that could be passed down to their offspring.

Outdoor Living

We believe that outdoor living is essential for a cat’s physical and mental well-being. All our Kings and Queens are provided with a beautiful outdoor living space filled with native gardens, where they have plenty of room to play, climb, and explore. This promotes their natural instincts and overall quality of life.

Superior Care

We take great care to provide our kitten/Cats with and have developed a program to support their development from our kittens to our adults. We are dedicated to breeding healthy and happy cats that will become cherished members of your family. Our kittens are raised in a loving and nurturing environment, giving them the best start in life and they can continue to develop their sweet personality with their forever family, becoming a well-socialised, confident, and transition in no time at all.

Our Cattery

We pride ourselves on our prestige design of our Cattery and our beautiful native gardens, specifically designed for our precious Ragdoll Kings & Queens. Our Ragdolls do enjoy outside living due to it being a cat safe area. This gives them time to soak up some sunshine, play and roll in the dirt if they desire. They also have the opportunity to ingest extra nutrients from the native grasses etc: We believe this has been a major factor with the happiness, health and the high quality of our Ragdolls.
